IP on Sci-Mate
From Sci-Mate Wiki
Sci-Mate > Information| Branch: Feedback-Wiki Type: Help Information Intention: For Publication Read/Write Permissions: Open Access | Authors : 21.05.2010 - Christopher Dyer - Sci-Mate |
The Sci-Mate is designed to allow academic researchers to easily and safely distribute knowledge and technology across disciplines and into commercial development projects without loosing control of their Intellectual Property (IP). All owners of IP are able to remain in complete control of their IP, and even strengthen their claim to ownership through copyright and other internation laws protecting this form of ownership.
Users can define any license or conditions under which others may consider its usage (eg, GNU or Creative Commons).
By sharing ideas under these conditions, IP has the potential to increase in value as more people recognise its value.
[edit] Copyright
Copyright and other international laws protecting IP ownership are used to protect original information submitted to the site (see Sci-Mate Use of Copyright), while simultaneously ensuring such knowledge is utilized and developed to its full potential.
[edit] Conditions
Clear conditions prior to the exchange of any item helps both the supplier and the receiving party understand their obligations. Licenses and/or material transfer agreements can be defined up-front for consideration during the evaluation phase, not once experiments are planned. This understanding of obligation provides a much higher chance of compliance, and with a clearer description also of the material, a much higher potential for productive collaboration.
It is even possible for suppliers to apply specific development license that can control the use of their service or technology to protect existing interests.
[edit] Legitimate Records of Exchange
Legitimate records of exchange provide details that can be used to protect IP by demonstrating origin and clear conditions of distribution. Both knowledge content and item exchanges meticulously record details of submissions, then create reports, notifications and other records that can be used to protect IP.
Automatic notifications help researchers inform supervisors, technology administrators, and other shared interests about various forms of content- without any extra work for the researcher. Such notifications themselves provide organizations with sufficient record to administer and protect shared intellectual property.
Researchers, shared interests, and administrators can more easily track, trace and demonstrate the legitimate and illegitimate use of their shared IP.
