Sci-Mate was developed on the principle that academic ideas are valuable and useful. Unfortunately, a vast vast majority of this potential is not developed to its full potential.

One reason for the lack of application and development of academic ideas may be that research is largely 'results driven', and not technology focused. High impact publications often lead to the over-estimation of underlying technology, and low impact publications generally result in the undervaluing of technology. Currently, there are only limited opportunities for researchers to describe the full potential of emerging technologies, and the conditions underwhich exchange would be considered.

This has left scientists at a considerable disadvantage when negotiating the value of their IP with industry and publishers and the conditions of exchange. Despite the incredible wealth generated from the publication and development of scientific research, academic scientist are still almost entirely dependent on subsidies, gifts and handouts from third party sources.

Sci-Mate is an opportunity for all academic researchers to use (and help develop) new Web 2.0 software solutions to compliment their existing publications (enhancing their impact), while developing the value of underlying technology.

The site itself is a cooperative project, intended to be owned and controlled by its researcher members. After opening a beta-test version in September 2009, the project is seeking researchers and organizations interested in collaboratively developing the site. To become a founding member, please register and start creating content. If you have ideas or require any form of support, please contact us. We would be very interested to cooperate with any group who believes their ideas, while relatively low in commercial potential, could still help a lot of people.
